When i started the Wellbrook loop group on Facebook there was only a few receive loops available but mainly Wellbrook, W6LVP and MFJ
Over the years there has been improvements plus other manufacturers come on to the market.
Im sure they will be many more as time goes on.
Examples are:
  • Wellbrook
  • W6LVP
  • MFJ
  • DX Engineering
  • AOR
  • and the very cheap MLA-30 (i’ll go into this later) Sorry no link but if you search Ebay there are lots.

There are also Manufacturers making Loop amplifiers where you add your own wire or tubing, these are:
  • Wellbrook with the ALA-100M
  • Cross Country wireless
  • and LZ1AQ

Why have a loop?

Well many reasons, my reason is that I have interference locally and i possibly could turn the loop and null this out, you may live in a rental property where you can’t put any antennas up or a restricted property that does not allow outside antennas.

But they cost quite a lot don’t they?

They can cost a few hundred pounds but recently they are very cheap products coming on the market. EG: is the MLA-30, to me the antenna as it is just doesn’t measure up to others but as low as £30 its a good start, there are many people who have got video’s on Youtube about this antenna. Some have modified it with better coax, this for me is the best modification, others have used different loops made out of coax or tubing.
I think the Chinese missed out when making this and if they had made a loop amplifier instead with a BNC it would have been in direct competition with the other loop amps.
Cross Country Wireless in the UK have come on board making a loop amplifier too but at the time of writing they are improving and modifying it, one to keep an eye on I think.
LZ1AQ loop amps have been on the market for a while and again has a good following.

Loop amp or Loop, which should i get?

I think this is a personal choice, depending if you want a complete off the shelf product or want to add your own loop, plus your budget, most cover the Shortwave bands.

My personal choice?

Well Ive been through most and to me I prefer the option to add your own loop as i have a 1m loop made out of Pex-al-pex (a aluminium water pipe covered in plastic) also i have a loop made out of RG213 coax and a huge horizontal wire loop of 190ft low to the ground.

Whats my advice?

Do your research, don’t believe everything you see on Youtube as they may have a better installation and placement than you can achieve.
